Staying Healthy in December – (Aether Bios Clinic) Bridgeford’s Best Bites: Nutrition Tips

December can be a challenging month with the excesses and stresses of Christmas festivities

EXCESSES:

Food

There is no healthy way to eat ALL the food associated with Christmas in one day.

Too many rich foods leave us feeling bloated, heavy and sluggish over burdening our digestive systems.

Why pig out at Christmas and then suffer for two months to lose the excess weight!

  • Always eat breakfast
  • Eat regularly, preferably little and often
  • Eat raw salads for lunch regularly, even in winter
  • Enjoy some “treats” without Christmas being a constant treat
  • Pause between courses or seconds: It takes 20minutes for the brain to hear the stomach
  • Get outside for walks in the fresh air to avoid binge eating on the couch

Alcohol

We tend to celebrate the festivities with extra alcohol

  • Never drink on an empty stomach
  • Have savoury snacks with any pre-meal drinks
  • Preferably drink alcohol with a meal

Avoid Hangovers

  • Drink water alternately with alcoholic drinks at parties
  • Keep well hydrated; drink water before going to bed
  • Pace yourself!

STRESSES

Christmas is promoted as a time of joy, yet can become a time of stress if you are not feeling joyous.

Several factors can affect our stress and nervous systems

  • Family and social tensions and worries; unrealistic expectations of self and others
  • Excess sugar and alcohol affect our adrenal glands, giving us a rush then dropping us down
  • Over burdened digestion can make the brain sluggish
  • Lack of sleep leaves us jaded
