Most of us feel better in the summer months.
This is not just to do with food.
In summer we tend to get more light, air, water and exercise.
As the nights draw in we tend to stay indoors on the couch and eat warm comfort foods.
Start now to cultivate good habits to energise you through to next summer.
Light
We absorb vitamin D from sunlight. It is good for bones and teeth, thyroid function and metabolism, improving immunity and lifting our spirits. Absorption can be blocked by sunscreen, glass, clothing, cloud and smog.
- Regularly expose your skin to safe levels of sunlight, 10-15 minutes is enough for fair skin
- Eat oily fish and eggs for good sources of vitamin D; some foods are fortified
- Get a light box or full spectrum daylight bulbs, especially if you suffer with S.A.D
Air
Staying indoors more with windows closed leaves us breathing stuffy stale air. `
Yogis believe we can breathe “prana” or life force.
- Get outside and give yourself a daily airing
- Spend time in nature, by water or in the woods
- Learn good breathing techniques to extract prana
Water
Our bodies need water. If we don’t drink enough we recycle from waste!
We cannot be vitally healthy without drinking enough water.
- Get the water habit
- When you are thirsty you are already dehydrated
- Drink 1½-2 litres of good clean water daily
Exercise
Find an exercise you enjoy.
- Take a brisk walk
- Join a gym, yoga or dance class nearby
- Buy a rebounder. Dance or jog on it to your favourite music
Food
Eating a rainbow diet, rich in fruit and vegetables is essential to good health.
- Eat salads at lunchtime
- Steam vegetables lightly to retain nutrients
- Microwaves kill most nutrients
