New Years Resolutions – Whats the point?!

There is a very good point to goal setting at any time of year, not just at New Year. When you set a goal for something you really want/desire to do and aim for it, you are more likely to reach it, especially eliciting help and support of someone who can guide you.

Individual Goals: Earlier this year, a yoga student of mine wanted to do a headstand free standing for a least one second for the first time in her life, before she turned 50. With this aim in mind, and with regular focus we gently worked towards building the needed strength over time. I guided her in the safe steps to follow in class and at home and she was delighted to achieve her goal.

Groups Goals: In September, I invited my yoga students to set goals of something they really wanted to achieve before the Xmas party. Making sure the goals were SMART, we monitored them along the way to accommodate changing circumstances. The group focus was an added benefit and everyone achieved their goals the week before the Xmas party. I find great satisfaction witnessing the joy and delight on someone’s face when they achieve a skill that they have aimed for, even though it may have terrified them in the past.

Setting Goals: Make it something you really want/desire to do, rather than something you ‘think’ you should do. A simple formula for goal setting is to make the goal S.M.A.R.T:

Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve?

Measurable: How will you know when you have achieved it, what specifically will you notice?

Attainable: Is your goal possible/attainable for you within your time, money, limits, talents and abilities?

Relevant: Is this something you really want to achieve and why?

Timely: Timelines help us focus and take action. Is the time limit realistic for you to achieve your goal?

How I can Help YOU:

The Yoga classes I teach and the skills I use along with Integrated Osteopathy and Nutrition can help with much of the above.

Osteopathy Testimonial: I can honestly say I felt a reduction in pain after the first session with Lin Bridgeford. I have always suffered with back issues and was really struggling with lifting, bending and carrying after having my first baby. After further sessions I noticed other aspects changing also; I felt calmer and less stressed, and also noticed that things were shifting in my life related to work and finances.

Lin made me feel very comfortable and relaxed; she is very personable and even though she is extremely busy you don’t feel like just a number, which was very important to me. Having had such good responses from her treatments we are now considering taking our 10 month daughter for treatments to assist with her immune system. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Lin.

Yoga Testimonial 1: I’ve been attending Lin’s yoga class for almost a year.  I have a lung condition, but it hasn’t stopped me from attempting any of the poses.

I live at the top of a very steep hill, and recently when my car was off the road, I attempted the dreaded hill on foot and to my delight I found it was nowhere near as difficult as it used to be.  In addition, I have a smart watch with a yoga feature and to my absolute surprise, during the last two classes I have used 550\560 calories each session.  I also find I sleep better on the days I attend the yoga class. I shall certainly sign up for next year.

Yoga Testimonial 1: Since I took up yoga I’ve noticed an improvement in my general levels of energy, flexibility and strength. I’ve been surprised at how energetic the Ashtanga style of yoga is, in a good way. Also I can now balance on one foot when I pull my socks on!

I’m 71, so no spring chicken and recently had double hernias fixed and I’m sure the yoga before and after helped with my recovery. I also attend the Pranayama breathing sessions which are both relaxing, fun and informative. Do you know where your lungs are and how they function, well I do now!
